what exactly do people who are involved in witchcraft believe in and do?
What I think you are referring to is the Wicca tradition, which was developed in the 20th century and is now “modern witchcraft”. People who consider themselves Wiccan often times call themselves witches. They worship the God(Sun) and Goddess(Earth) which manifest themselves into different deities. They also conduct different rituals and practice magic. They believe that through certain practices they can manipulate and control the secret forces of nature.

any advice on choosing a deck of tarot cards, how to use them, etc?
One of the key things about a deck of tarot cards is that they be new when you purchase them. A used deck is ok, but most mystics and fortune tellers say that used decks can be attached to the original owner, and that starting with your own new deck is best. It is also extremely useful to purchase a book on tarot cards, which will teach you how to read them and the meanings of each card. There are starter decks, which have the meaning printed on the card, but we prefer the typical deck which has illustrations, and for the most part, little to no words. Good luck!
